What Is DNS Administration
What Is DNS Administration?
DNS stands for Domain Name System. It is the part of your domain name that controls where important services are directed, including your website, email, security records and third-party verification records.
Although DNS is usually invisible to website visitors and email users, it plays a vital role in keeping your domain working correctly.
Why DNS Records Matter
Your DNS records help tell the internet where to find your website, where to deliver your emails, and which services are authorised to use your domain.
If DNS records are incorrect, outdated or missing, it can cause serious issues. Your website may stop loading, emails may fail to send or receive, or important services may no longer verify correctly.
What the DNS Administration Fee Covers
Our DNS administration fee is a small annual charge that covers the time involved in managing, checking and updating DNS records when required during the year.
This may include updates relating to:
- Website hosting records
- Email routing records
- Domain verification records
- Security records such as SPF, DKIM and DMARC
- Third-party services connected to the domain
- General domain health checks
- Correcting outdated or duplicated DNS entries
Why We Keep DNS Records Clean and Updated
Over time, DNS records can become cluttered or outdated. This often happens when a business changes hosting provider, email provider, website platform, marketing tools or verification services.
Old records that are no longer needed can create confusion and, in some cases, cause problems with email delivery, website performance or domain verification.
Keeping DNS records clean and properly maintained helps reduce the risk of technical issues and makes it easier to manage future changes.
Why the Fee Is Charged Annually
Rather than charging separately each time a DNS change is required, we standardise the cost as a small annual fee.
The fee is £12 + VAT per year, which is equivalent to £1 per month. Some years, a domain may require very little DNS work. In other years, it may require several checks, updates or corrections. Charging a small annual fee keeps this simple and predictable for clients.
Examples of When DNS Updates May Be Needed
DNS changes may be required when:
- A website is moved to new hosting
- Email settings are changed or corrected
- Google, Microsoft, Meta or another platform needs domain verification
- Security records need to be added or updated
- A domain needs to be checked for outdated records
- Email delivery issues need investigating
- A new website, landing page or service is connected to the domain
A Small Fee for Ongoing Domain Health
The DNS administration fee helps ensure that your domain records are properly maintained and that required DNS changes can be handled without raising a separate charge each time.
It is a small annual cost that supports the smooth running of your website, email and connected domain services.
